What Montreal Daily collects, why, and the rights you have over your personal information under Quebec’s Law 25 and Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA).
01Scope & the principles we follow
This policy covers montreal-daily.com, including our news content, free classifieds marketplace, business directory, and newsletters. It applies to visitors, registered users, and anyone who posts a classifieds listing or business directory profile. We follow the 10 principles of Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and the additional obligations Quebec’s Law 25 places on organizations handling the personal information of Quebec residents.

02What we collect
- Account information: name, email, and borough if you register an account
- Classifieds & directory listings: contact details and any information you choose to include in a posted ad or business profile
- Messages: content of messages sent through our in-site messaging between buyers and sellers
- Newsroom contact: anything you send to our editors or support addresses
- Technical data: IP address, browser type, and device information, collected automatically for security and site operation

03How we use it
We use personal information to: operate the classifieds and directory marketplace, including connecting buyers and sellers; respond to messages sent to our newsroom or support; maintain account security and prevent fraud or abusive listings; and, only with consent, to understand site usage through analytics or measure the performance of advertising. We do not sell personal information to third parties.
04Consent
We rely on your consent as the legal basis for collecting and using personal information. For non-sensitive, expected uses, consent is implied by the action you take. For anything else, including analytics and marketing cookies, we require express, opt-in consent before collection begins. You can withdraw consent at any time.
05Cookies
We use essential, analytics, and marketing cookies. Analytics and marketing cookies are only activated after you actively consent. Full detail on each category is in our Cookie Policy.
06Who we share it with
We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the site, and only to the extent needed for them to perform that service. We do not share personal information with advertisers directly, and we do not sell it.
07Cross-border data transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside Quebec, including elsewhere in Canada or in the United States. Where that happens, we assess the provider’s privacy and security practices before transfer, consistent with Law 25’s requirements for a privacy impact assessment on cross-border transfers.
08Automated decisions
We do not use fully automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects about you. Search and sort ordering in our classifieds and directory is rule-based sorting, not profiling, and does not use personal characteristics to rank listings.

10Security safeguards
We use encryption in transit, access controls limiting who on our team can view personal information, and regular review of our systems. No system is completely secure, and we ask that you also use a strong, unique password for your account.
11Your rights
Under Law 25 and PIPEDA, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your information, subject to legal retention requirements
- Receive your data in a portable, structured format
- Withdraw consent for any use based on consent, at any time

12Children’s privacy
Montreal Daily’s classifieds and directory services are intended for users 18 and older. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact our Privacy Officer and we’ll delete it.
13Breach notification
If a security breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected individuals and Quebec’s privacy regulator with diligence, consistent with Law 25’s breach notification requirement.

15Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted on this page with an updated review date, and where required by law, we’ll notify registered users directly.
