Corrections
Accuracy is the foundation of trust. When we get something wrong, we say so plainly, in public, and we don’t quietly rewrite the record.
01What we correct
We issue a correction when a published story contains a material error of fact: an incorrect name, date, number, quote, statistic, or a claim that would meaningfully change a reader’s understanding of the story. Corrections are noted directly on the affected article, dated, and describe in plain language what was wrong and what the correct information is.
02Updates vs. corrections
We issue an update when new information becomes available that adds to a story without meaning the original version was wrong. A clarification is used when a story was factually accurate but phrased in a way that reasonably confused readers about what was meant.
03Silent fixes
We make silent edits only for typos, broken links, and formatting errors, none of which affect the meaning of a story. We do not silently rewrite factual claims, quotes, or headlines once a story has been published.
04Timeliness & prominence
Confirmed errors are corrected as soon as we can verify the fix, typically within 24 hours of confirmation. A correction is given prominence proportional to the original error.
05Where corrections appear
- A dated correction note at the point of the error within the article itself
- Listed on this Corrections page, in reverse chronological order
- If the original error was shared on social media by our own accounts, a follow-up post noting the correction
06Corrections to archived stories
We correct errors in older stories on the same basis as new ones, whenever they’re brought to our attention, regardless of publication date.
07How to report an error
Email editors@montreal-daily.com with the article headline, a link if possible, and a description of what you believe is wrong. An editor reviews every request and responds within 3 business days.
